Norfolk’s Garage and Yard Sale Rules

As the weather becomes warmer, so does the urge to have garage or yard sales. As the wise philosopher once said … “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”. Commissioner of Revenue Sharon McDonald has some friendly suggestions and reminders:

  • No sales can be conducted without first obtaining a permit from the Commissioner of Revenue;
  • No more than two persons residing at different addresses are allowed to conduct a yard/garage sale at a common site in any residential area;
  • No fraternal or civic organizations are allowed to conduct yard/garage sales;
  • No more than two yard/garage sale permits can be issued for any location during the calendar year;
  • No sale can be conducted for more than three consecutive days;
  • No sale can be conducted prior to 12 noon on Sunday;
  • No sign advertising the sale can be displayed on any street, sidewalk or public right of way;
  • One sign can be displayed at the site of the sale as long as the sign does not exceed 12 feet; and
  • Violations of the regulations can result in a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100.
