Neighborhood Watch — Form of Payment Alert

Do you use: cash; debit card; credit card; or paper checks as forms of payment? These payment forms have risks associated with them, but as I’m just learning, paper checks may pose the greatest dangers. All a criminal needs to access your checking account is the bank routing number and account number both of which are located on each check. I recently found out this fact the hard way when my checking account bank routing number and account number fell into criminal hands and my account was accessed and funds removed. Yes, your bank will normally step in and investigate the fraudulent activity and restore the lost funds but not before you experience mounds of paperwork and lost time. While working the criminal activity on my checking account, I discovered this article on the internet “Checks — The Most Dangerous Transaction“. Take a few minutes and read it — it may help you avoid fraudulent actions like I experienced.

Community Update

Its that time of the year when the criminal element increases its activities — please do not become a crime victim, secure your property and watch out for strangers, especially if they are picking up a package at your neighbors house that was just dropped off by a delivery service.

On a different subject, are you interested in development plans and opportunities in East Ocean View (EOV)? If you are, you’re cordially invited to the EOV Civic League meeting this Thursday evening, Dec 5th, at the EOV Recreation Center on 20th Bay Street @ 7 PM to hear Mr. Steve Anderson, Director, Development, City of Norfolk, talk about EOV plans.

Undesirable, Invasive, and Dangerous Dune Grass

Attached is a fact sheet that gives all the details on Japanese Sedge or Carex kobomugi. Norfolk will be incorporating from this year on a Sedge eradication element in their annual dune maintenance program. Just to reinforce that even though this plant is undesirable and invasive, it is one of the listed plants in the Coastal Primary Sand Dune regulations so a homeowner cannot eradicate it within the area designated as dunes without a permit. However, if it’s on your lot and it is not in the dune (Norfolk officials would like to stake the dune limits first), then the herbicide controls detailed in the fact sheet could be used by a private property owner. If you have any further questions, please contact Norfolk’s Environmental Services Bureau.

Construction ALERT

As you might have noticed, the new East Beach Marina Apartment complex construction has started (South of Pretty Lake Ave near 30th Bay St). Of potential interest is the fact that this construction will include the placement of at least 150 concrete pilings — each being 80 foot long. These pilings will be pounded into place to support the interior garage and may produce potentially damaging impacts on homes nearby. If your home is near the construction site, you might want to take some before pictures of your home so that if damages do occur you will have evidence of your home’s condition prior to the pilings installation.

FYI: It should be noted that the recent pilings installation at the corner of 29th Bay St and Pretty Lake Ave did cause some minor damages to homes in our community, but the prior home conditions of these homes were not documented so validation of the pilings installation damages would be difficult to prove.

Surge Protectors are recalled due to fire risk

Safety notice: surge protectors are recalled due to fire risk. There has been a major recall of an electrical power strip surge protector that can overheat, smoke and start a fire. You should check your office and your home to determine if you are impacted by this recall. The recalled units (series APC 7 and APC 8) were manufactured by Schneider Electric before 2003. (See below for a photo of one of the recalled power strips.) If you do have one of the impacted units, unplug it immediately. Call Schneider Electric IT Corp. toll-free at 888-437-4007 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or go to http://recall.apc.com to see the surge protectors in question and/or to submit a claim for a free replacement. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the company had received: 700 reports of overheating and melting; 13 reports of injuries, including smoke inhalation, and burns from touching the overheated device; 55 reports of property damage, including a house fire that caused $916,000 in damage and a fire in a medical facility that caused a loss of $750,000.
